Literacy

We teach reading through regular group and whole class guided reading sessions.  Parents are encouraged to support their children in reading at home. We promote a love of reading by holding three weekly reading club sessions for parents and children on our Big Red Bus.  Children also have a timetabled library session where they choose a book to enjoy and share at home.

We provide children with a wide range of fully decodable reading books to develop decoding, prosody and comprehension skills throughout school. These are part of the Collins Big Cat Phonics, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised. Phonics teaching follows the validated scheme, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. We provide additional support for those needing extra practise to keep up with phonics teaching. These include daily 1:1 and/or group sessions to quickly close identified gaps. We teach children to form letters correctly through regular daily handwriting practise. Once children are secure in forming letters correctly, they begin joining digraphs and trigraphs. In year two children are encouraged to join all letters to develop the speed and fluency of their handwriting. Children requiring additional support with writing dexterity access the Theoderescue intervention.
