Let’s Play Shops!

The children have been learning lots about vegetables recently and we thought it would be a really good idea to make our own grocers shop.

Many of the children didn’t know about greengrocers as many go the supermarket and buy all their shopping. We used the IWB to watch a clip about customers buying fruit and vegetables and this helped us to design our own shop.

We wrote a list of all the items we wanted to sell and our grown-ups in nursery bought them for us. They added a few extras to challenge our thinking. We thought the butternut squash looked like a big nut! Similarly we thought the aubergine looked like a plum.

We have been learning lots of new songs and one of our favourites is ‘Chop, Chop, Choppety Chop’ . We have used vegetables to learn about chopping but have recently enjoyed using vegetables to learn about music. We chopped to the ‘pulse’ which was great fun, especially when we changed the ‘tempo’; it was tricky but great fun!

We have developed our role play, we know how to greet customers and  bag items into a variety of different sized bags.  We have  started to learn about weighing items and have enjoyed using old fashioned scales and weights to determine which vegetables were heaviest and lightest. We have drawn vegetables and used them to print with, it was very interesting to find out what was inside them.

We have asked if we could have a toy shop next, because we are thinking about different toys as it approaches Christmas. We have written a list together with regards the items we would like to sell in our shop.
